MYSTICAL BALI - Travel report by Christine Stranger from Fine Travel
Bali has a special place in my heart, my husband and I holiday there annually.
The Indonesian island of Bali may be small in size, but its prominence as a destination is huge, and rightfully so. Ask travellers what Bali means to them and you’ll get different answers.
For me Bali means; the smell of the numerous frangipani trees, enchanting temple ceremonies, trees and statues adorned in ceremonial fabrics, exquisite little offerings left all over the island that materialise as if by magic, the soft smell if incense and the tranquillity.
Religion in Bali has two overwhelming features, it's absolutely everywhere and it's good fun! You can't get away from religion in Bali: there are temples in every village, shrines in every field, offerings being made at every corner.

Balinese people are friendly lot. Smile at them, and they will smile back. Balinese attentiveness in the service industry is simply unmatched and legendary. They are ever helpful and will always try hard to please you. Such great politeness and courtesy, Bali's most precious asset is her people. Their exemplary attitudes will keep enticing visitors in droves.
Whilst Tourism in Bali has affected many areas like Kuta, Legian & Seminyak, which are generally inhabited by the young or people wishing to shop you can always try quieter areas like Sanur.
Sanur is located on the South West Coast of Bali, this is an excellent alternative to the madness of the Kuta area. There are numerous resorts on the beach. The Puri Santrian is a great resort option located at the end of Sanur beach, with an open reception and exquisite grounds.
Food is a good reason to visit Bali there are restaurants offering food of all nationalities. Middle Eastern, European, Asian. There are numerous restaurants dotted along the beach and in the small town of Sanur . There is an abundance of international and local food choices.
In the village there is the very popular Massimo’s for authentic Italian food, (you need to reserve a table). Plonk yourself in the sand at The Stiff Chilli for a Bintang beer on a steamy day. Food prices are excellent in Bali.
If you wish to stay somewhere quieter an hour’s drive inland you will find the cultural town of Ubud. Surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali, scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, rivers, cheap accommodation and unique luxury hotels.
And it's central location makes it easy to get from Ubud to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.

If you want complete relaxation you can stay amongst the rice paddies and enjoy the endless massages on offer there is nothing quite as relaxing as dipping your feet in a petal bath followed by a massage. Bali has stunning spas, and massages are well priced. For the more energetic a cycle ride through the rice paddies is an absolute delight.
Ubud tourism focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the 21st century.
There are many other areas to visit in Bali, there is something for everyone. If you want to step back in time head North to the little fishing village of Amed, located near Mount Agung. Or for the seafood restaurants and sunsets visit Jimbaran Bay. The list is endless.
There are also numerous activities for everyone diving, elephant rides, surfing, yoga, cooking classes, golfing or you can even get married at one of the many venues. For shoppers head to Kuta where there are bargains galore.
Bali is an amazing destination.
