Much beyond the breathtaking scenery, the way these people live surprises everyone, with their hope, hospitality and happiness. The Brazilians’ desire to show visitors what is good about their country converts its vitality into creativity, flashed about in contagious colours and sounds.

Brazil has never been so popular, and with six international airports travelling to the country has never been easier.

The northeast, known best for its beaches, is accessed via Fortaleza, Recife & Salvador Bahia. To the south-east are Sao Paulo and the spectacular city of Rio de Janeiro. To the northwest of the country you’ll find Manaus, the starting point for an exploration of the mighty Amazon.

When to go:

March-November is the driest and best time to visit the south and south-eastern regions, including Rio de Janeiro. December -February can be rainy and humid. The evenings and winter days in the south (June-September) can be fairly cool (5 C), and warm clothing may well be needed.

Food:

Caipirinha (sometimes referred to as rocket-fuel), is a deceptively potent glass of the local spirit topped up with pounded ice and limes. One is delicious, two even more so. The most famous dish is the feijoada completa comprising several meat ingredients including beef jerky, smoked sausage, smoked tongue and salt pork, along with spices, herbs, vegetables and black beans. Sprinkled with manioc flour this dish is eaten with kale (couve) and slices of orange, and best accompanied with glasses of aguardente. Churrasco, another dish, is a mixed grill, including excellent steak, served with roasted manioc flour. It is normally found on the menus of specialised restaurants called churrascarias or rodizios.
