Peru

Machu Pichu, PeruWith the most extensive collection of ancient archaeological sites in South America, Machu Picchu shines out in people’s vision of Peru.

Whether you hike the Inca trail or take the train from Cusco, you will never forget your first sight of this mist and myth shrouded Inca citadel. The legacy of the Incas is ever present in today’s Peruvian society.

In contrast to the rugged Andes, vast tracts of jungle spread their green carpets across the country. In fact, home to a vast diversity of plants and wildlife, Peru encompasses 84 of the 104 defined life zones on Earth.
Everyone who visits Peru inevitably goes to Cusco, one of the most fascinating cities anywhere in the world. It is important to note all flights operate from Lima, which also serves as a gateway to the southern tourist regions. Arequipa is the base to explore the hypnotic Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, and the Tambopata National Park.
From Lake Titicaca it is also possible to cross into Bolivia and down to Chile, a worthwhile overland journey. No matter where you venture in Peru, get ready for a once in a lifetime adventure and perhaps life changing experience.

When to go:

The coast is generally sunny and hardly ever receives any rain, but from April to November there is a heavy sea mist. The highlands have a wet season (December to March) and a dry season (May to September), when the days are clear and sunny but very cold at night especially at altitude. Currency: Nuevo Sol
Time: GMT - 5 hours
Capital City: Lima

Food

Beverages:

Peruvian cuisine is a real revelation. The jewel in the coastal culinary crown is ceviche. This is a delicious dish of raw white fish marinated in lemon juice, onion and hot peppers. Another mouth watering dish is escabeche – fish with onions, hot green pepper, red peppers, prawns, cumin, hard boiled eggs, olives and sprinkled with cheese. Lomo saltado is stir fried beef with onions, vinegar, chilli, ginger, tomatoes and fried potatoes, served with rice. And whilst better known as a popular childrens’ pet in the western world, cuy, (guinea pig), is considered a real delicacy. Peru’s most famous drink is pisco, a grape brandy made in the Inca Valley, used in the wonderful pisco sour, a deceptively potent cocktail which also includes egg whites and lime juice.
