Your Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1- Arrive London (2 nights)
On arrival pick up your rental vehicle and check into your London accommodation.
Day 2 - London at leisure
Discover the city at your own pace. (B)
Day 3 - London - York (3 nights)
Leave London today and drive to York. (B)
Day 4 - York sightseeing
Join your guide on your chosen sightseeing tour for a walk around Roman York, on the medieval walls and through the ancient streets with history brought to life. (B)
Day 5 - Whitby excursion
Today take a drive to the historic port of Whitby. From the old town 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St. Mary, whose churchyard on East Cliff gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his famous book ‘Dracula’. Spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the quayside. Before returning to York visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. (B)
Day 6 - York - Newcastle (4 nights)
Head north to the land of the ‘Geordies’. The area is one of contrasts from Romans, Medieval castles, industrial might, windswept beaches and moorland to the warm and friendly welcome of the locals. Your first stop is Durham Cathedral, the greatest Norman building in England, perhaps even in Europe. It is advisable if time permits to take a tour of the adjoining Durham Castle. As entrance is restricted due to the castle being occupied since 1840 by University College, please check on arrival for availability of space on a guided tour. Continue your journey with the short drive to the North of England open air museum at Beamish. Experience life as it was in the area during the industrial revolution. Finally make the short drive to Newcastle and your chosen accommodation. (B)
Day 7 - Newcastle sightseeing
This morning join your chosen sightseeing tour and discover the varied history of Tyneside. This afternoon is at leisure. (B)
Day 8 - Lindisfarne excursion
This morning depart for Lindisfarne, the island which gave birth to English Christianity. Visit the ruins of the priory as well as the castle and nature reserve. Then to Bamburgh to visit the castle, with one of the most spectacular outlooks of any castle in Britain. Continue down the coast to Craster to see the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, then to Howick Hall, home of Charles Earl Grey who introduced the Great Reform Bill of 1832 as well as Earl Grey Tea. On the drive back to Newcastle stop to visit the castle and village of Warkworth, featured in several Shakespeare plays. (B)
Day 9 - Alnwick Castle excursion
North today to Alnwick Castle, home of the Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. Tour the castle, still the home of the current Duke, as well as the impressive gardens. Afterwards drive to the village of Rothbury to visit the home of Sir William Armstrong famous for his inventions such as his breech loading rifle to name just one. The house was the first in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity. (B)
Day 10 - Newcastle - Lake District (2 nights)
Today drive west on the road near Hadrian’s Wall to visit Vindolanda, the most important Roman site outside Italy. In the museum you can see some of the Vindolanda writing tablets depicting everyday life. They are the earliest written records of life in Britain. Afterwards make the short drive to the Roman Army museum. Then west to the Lake District. (B)
Day 11 - Lake District at leisure
The day is free for you to enjoy the scenic beauty of this natural wonderland. (B)
Day 12 - Lake District - Stratford-upon-Avon (1 night)
This morning depart for Stratford upon Avon. You will have time to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and other historic buildings. (B)
Day 13 - Stratford-upon-Avon - London
Depart for London where your tour ends with the return of your rental vehicle. (B)
